The iPad 3 was expected for a long time by many people and runs on the tablet platform currently considered most popular. For many the patience invested in waiting for the iPad 3 has paid off because the improvements delivered can be considered impressive. There’s the new camera, the support for faster data networks and of course that Retina Display designed to measure 9.7 inches and deliver a resolution of 2,048 x 1,536 pixels. That means HD content will look amazing on this portable device. The only downside is that it will be tricky to enjoy HD content on the go unless you decide to stream it. That’s because the space required by such movies and games is impressive. So, is a 16GB iPad 3 enough for a user to enjoy all the capabilities of a new iPad 3?

Storage space has always been an issue as people have started to have more and more interest in portable devices. Switching from a desktop computer to a notebook can be a traumatic experience because you will no longer have that generous storage space that allows you to save all kind of junk and in the same time some quality media. However, netbooks aren’t as limiting as iPads. If you are ok with using a platter drive you can easily make available 1TB of storage on any netbook of interest. Even if you think that a SSD is more desirable, you will still be able to get that generous storage space of interest because the maximum size of a SSD that can be integrated in a netbook is 512GB. By contrast, the iPad, that wants to be compared with netbooks and actually replace them, limits users to 16GB, 32GB and 64GB. That’s way less than what SSD-equipped netbooks can put at your disposal. So, if iPads want to keep up with netbooks and want to be able to deliver the storage space necessary for the type of multimedia content they can handle, they need to offer more internal storage or at least support for adding a larger hard drive.

In the current situation, if you want to use your iPad 3 for watching a HD movie, you need to make available 1GB of content every 30 minutes. That means if you are interested in a 2-hour movie made available by iTunes, you will have to be willing to sacrifice 4GB of storage space. If you add to the equation a few games like Mass Effect, Real Racing 2 and Batman that are known to be media-rich, you will notice the loss of more than 1GB of data. That means you will run out of free space rather sooner than later, especially if you have invested in the 16GB version of iPad 3. So, it has become obvious that adding a larger hard drive to an iPad 3 is a necessity if you want to enjoy all the tablet’s capabilities no matter where your location.

Fortunately the market makes available a few solutions that are considered good enough, at least for now. It’s better to use these solutions than have to decide what content to delete and what content to keep in order to preserve some free space for emergency situations. One of the solutions that the market makes available when it comes to adding a larger hard drive to an iPad is a wireless solution and is able to add to the available space up to 500GB. I am talking about the Seagate GoFlex Satellite Wireless. As far as the design goes this solution is not that uncomfortable to carry around because it’s only 30% larger than an iPhone 4 and 2 times thicker. That means it stays portable while offering you the kind of storage space that you actually need to use in combination with an iPad 3. You will also notice that the device come with a battery that can support 5 hours of use and with status indicator lights that let you know the status of power and wireless activity. It’s true that this hard drive’s design also includes fast USB 3.0 ports, but in the case of the iPad you will have to rely on the device’s wireless capabilities that won’t challenge you at all. So, the good news is that this hard drive is compatible with iOS devices as well as with PCs and Macs.

There are also solutions offered by other well known manufacturers on the market. For example, Kingston makes available the Wi-Drive, a flash-based solution that can add to your iPad 3 between 16 and 32GB of storage space. The amount of external storage provided may not be impressive but the size that makes sure the device is pocketable and slim does. So, in the end you need to choose between a large hard drive like the GoFlex Satellite Wireless that needs to be carried in a backpack or a cargo pocket and a pocket-friendly-device like Kingston’s Wi-Drive that offers less extra storage space in exchange for improved portability. However, there’s a downside that they share: they can’t support app installations.
